  • Marsh Daisy

to celebrate my daughters birthday today, we planned a hatching for today, and to our delight, she came down for breakfast and found little chicks in the incubator.

The usual mxture of bantams, millefleur barbu d'uccle and some lemon booted, but to her huge squeals of happiness (would you believe she is 11 today?) some marsh daisies have hatched.

These are on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust Critical list, thought be extinct in 1971 but a small flock survided in somerset which all the daisies are descended from.

If anyone has any marsh daisies out there, and wishes to help conserve the breed, we would welcome a contact from you to help breed these birds. as yet we dont know the sex of these chicks - they are only 5 hours old at the moment - but if you have some MD, we would consider some exchanges to help improve blood lines etc. our trio are unrelated so the chicks should be healthy and vigorous

Photos will follow of course, but i have included a picture of "Daddy" Daisy so you can see what stunning birds they are.

well, hopefully this is the start of a good hatch after several poor hatches this year. There are another 48 eggs in the incy, so i hope we get a good proportion out. Looks like if they all hatch we need to rent a bigger house!

Seriously, anyone want to rent us a smallholding??? we need the space!

Happy Birthday Charlotte, what a lovely surprise for her.

The MD is a beautiful cock - is he yours too or did you just get the eggs? MDs are a bit like finer Welsummers aren't they? What colour eggs do they lay?

We have split our lot down into coloured egg layers - Welsummers (of course!), Cream Legbars and Minorcas. Then we have the heavier birds, mainly Sussex crosses for meat, with the two meat cocks, IG and LS, to cover them. Then the motley crew of bantams for just general eggs and brooding. Oh and hopefully Orps for brooding too (now thinking I have 2 boys and one girl unfortunately - anyone want a buff orp LF boy?)It would be nice to have a rare breed though, and the MD is rare. Although also considering getting a few more IG. Decisions, decisions ........

What a nice surprise for Charlotte though. My son is really into white birds, and "officially" the LS bantams are his. I would like to surprise him with a white orp one day.

No daddy and mommy are ours too, we have a trio, collected hens and cockerels for around the country so as far sa we know totally unrelated.

They lay a sort of cream egg.

hmmm - Ig or Daisy too difficult to choose - we have both

Ooohhh, the MD's are lovely.... they'd fit right in with my Welsummers and Barnevelders!

Are they very difficult to get hold of then? Wouldn't mind a couple for my purebreed flock...

Jealous now I looked at having some but could find any near me. Same with Ixworths. I'd really like some rare breed, hey ho, one day.

Just buy a farm, and then split it into smallholdings..you'll only outgrow one anyway lol

                        What a fantastic looking Rooster!

I've never heard of a Marsh Daisy, but I'm fick! Off for a Google in a mo to learn more. Apart from my Batties, which I love to bits, I adore the look of Wellsummers and Barnvelders, and I quite fancy having different egg colours one day....

Count me in on the Smallholding thing too!
