  • layers mash etc

I asked my husband to get me 2 bags of layers mash which would have cost 2.00, but he bought 2 20kg bags of layers mash. I also asked him to get a large feeder for the layer pellets. I am afraid if I used this mash they will not go back to pellets and how much mash would you use for 6 chickens, or can I fill the feeder up with mash. Alsoihope they have eaten today as they did not seem to like the feeder yesterday

If it's a new feeder, they will sort of look at it and wonder what on earth it is. Chooks are weird like that, but when they learn that there is food in it, they will go for it hammer and tongs. So don't panic.

Mash/Pellets? All the same, just different format. As soon as they figure the feeder, it don't matter what you throw in it, they will assume it's food and go for it whether it be pellets or mash... unless you got a toffee nosed chook who will only drink from a china tea cup! lol

    2 x 20kg bags! Well there's always room for expansion isn't there?
It should be ok and will last you a while providing you keep it dry and away from other nibbling pests (snails included, they eat paper too - strange things).

On how much food to give them? Just fill up their feeder and top it up when empty... they might over eat, they might not... but at least they will be eatting mostly good stuff. Keep tit bits and other treats til afternoon, they need to have their normal feed first.

Couldn't you take the bags back and exchange for pellets? 2 20kg bags are going to last 6 chooks months! You can feed meal dry but it will get scattered far and wide and wasted just encouraging vermin. Trouble is if you give it wet and give more than they want it will go sour very quickly.

Or you could make your money back selling on ebay?

Ideal for those who obviously know nothing about chooks

took one bag and exchanged for pellats, the thing is my chickens love the mash, but since I have had them fed them mostly pellets, but threw mash into night and they went mad, if I put mash in feeder would they over eat

Just a thought, I feed mine the mash/pellets in a bowl and water it down, they absolutely love it.

I would add though that I have reverted to using farmgate mash and smallholders pelletts, as the farmgate layers pelletts have preservatives in yuk!)

and with having ex batts and hybrids, I have to have both sorts and so I mix it up

I soak my pellets too, they seem to prefer it - big pellets, small birds.......it does go sour though so you can only put out what they will eat in a day or you get lots of waste.
