  • I got my chooks

I have just got my 3 girls,a Bluebell, a Light Sussex (younger daughter's) and a Magpie (elder daughter's). They are so sweet and seem to have settled in well already-haven't even heard any fights yet!! This evening's task is to name them!

The girls decided on a gemstone theme Anyway we now have Topaz, Pearl and Onyx. Topaz is the alarm siren-she noticed our cats this morning for the first time-I now know what an alarmed chicken sounds like (as well as a terrified cat!!)

When we first kept pigs, the one destined for the freezer was called Pork Chop. Goatkids often got called Kid Curry (that being their ultimate destination) but when we had a jersey bullcalf wished on us (by a vegetarian neighbour who had been hoping for a heifer) we got a bit more subtle and called him Keats (anagram). The first turkey was known as CD (Christmas Dinner)....

It was originally a device for stopping us getting sentimental about creatures we intended to eat, but yes, it did come to be a joke<g>
