  • i always thought chooks squawked when they laid an egg

but today i watched phoenix pop one out, was amazing she just kinda gritted her beak concentrated pushed and there it was .... plop ... her first egg and weirdly, she's the smallest of the 3, yet she laid the biggest egg so far, twice the weight of nevas first offering

2 mins later she started squawking the house down and running round like a nutter ... then the other 2 joined her ... so they don't do it cos of the pain .... they just do it to tell the world how clever they are to have laid an egg

LOL, some do make a din when they are laying, others do it quietly and then make a racket, sounds like Phoenix is in the second group. She was obviously very very proud of herself

Don't you remember ages ago when I described Hazel, my really noisy bossy one?

"I've laid an egg!! Did you know I've laid an egg? It's a lovely egg. Do you want to see my egg? My egg's in there. Oy, she's taken my egg!! Did you know she's taken my egg?" All this while strutting around going to each of the other chooks in turn It was a lovely ritual. Sounds like your Pheonix is just the same

I thought they squawked when they left the egg in the nest to distract predators away from the egg?
Maureens story is MUCH better though!!

Well, I don't know what happened when our first egg was laid as we found it first thing this morning, but I certainly felt like running around shouting 'I've got an egg, look at my egg, isn't this a lovely egg....'

How lovely to see an egg actually being laid!!!..I've never seen mine 'drop one'

Have to say though..they'll sometimes squalk before and after....and quite often the boys join in with exactly the same squawk!!!!

Ours just make gentle groaning noises - You know the statue called "The Thinker"? I imagine them sitting like that with a wing on their forehead and moaning softly as they push in a constipated manner!
