  • How much for food?

I gather the thing I shall be buying most of is layers pellets.

How much do you all pay for them?

So far I've only had chance to look online and they seem to be around £8 for a 20kg bag, but online they also charge almost the same for delivery.

I saw one place selling 25kg for £15 and £4 delivery.

I got mine from PJ Pets in Hull and I think it was about £7.50.

Do you have farmers feed merchant's nearby or horsey suppliers? They will have the feed cheaper

The farm shop near me sells three grades:
                      Cheapo brand: £7
                      Smallholders: £8
                      Smallholders organic: £13
                      (approx)
All 20Kg bags. I bought a bag of the £8 to get me started. If it lasts a while then I might upgrade.

How long does a 20Kg bag last for a couple of chickens?

As a matter of interest, how much more expensive is organic feed? Coco and Elvis don't eat much layers' pellets. I bought some non-organic from a local store before we got them and they sell it loose by the bucketful. I haven't had to buy more, but I was working out the cost last night and I paid £1.20 a kilo, which doesn't seem too bad until you realize that it works out at an unbelievable £24 a sack! There's a feed merchant near my mum though so it will be easy to pick up feed when we visit her, it just hasn't been worth it until now because a sack-full would have gone stale long before they finished it. The girls are arriving on Saturday though and I would imagine I'll be needing the larger quantities then, so we're off to buy some tomorrow and I know they sell the Organic Feed Company's range, I just don't know if it works out seriously expensive.

Blimey, Crundy are you psychic or something, you answer questions before I've asked them.

I'm still on my first 20kg, which I started using 29th March and I have 4 girl's, probably got 3 - 5 days left, but gonna get a new sack tomorrow so I don't run out completely.
So for a couple, you would be getting at least 2 months supply!

£5.50 for Farmgate layers, £9.80 for Smallholders growers (it was the only brand they had!). 2 sacks of layers feeds my 13 hens for around a month
My girls found their way into my heart and now they nest there
