  • Hen-drix....

.....tonight by our kind neighbour and farmer, was put her out of her misery. She suddenly went down hill yesterday after laying another thin shelled egg so I thought she was egg bound again.

But today she sat around with eyes shut and by this evening she was gaping for breath so me and Hubles decided to ask Shaun to do the deed as it could only be a kindness.

He checked her over and black slime oozed out of her beak so what he thought might have been pneumonia or maybe an respiratory infection turned out to be an infected crop.......I guess me clearing it failed after all I feel rubbish about the whole thing. Even worse it's Hubles hen, named after his beloved dog he lost last march.

                Awww...what a sad ending

But you must remember she would have died a while back if you'd not helped her out with her crop problem.
I think you did a really good job there- and I'll certainly be asking for your advice if a similar thing happens to one of my chooks.

Thank goodness for the help from your neighbour- I don't think I could 'do the deed'

In the end, after you'd done all you could, you did the last kind thing you could do for her.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

                    I know - me neither!

When I was watching her yesterday I was wondering if I had the courage to do it and how would be best. Decided that best meant someone else who knew what they were doing I've always liked to thing that I could if push came to shove but it's very different scenario when they're pets.

Getting him a box of posh biscuits today to say thanks - much like us they don't drink any more but chocolate is never turned away

(It was weird with only 3 girls this mornin and i'm sure they looked for her...)

So sorry to hear about this Lizzy. I was hoping she had picked up. Sad to lose them isnt it? Don't feel bad though. You couldn't have done more.
