  • Grotty jobs

Well I have cleaned out the inci. But more importantly I have also cracked the unhatched eggs to see what I had. Last time I did this I had used a higher humidity throughout and had too many full term but unhatched, presumably drowned in the shell. This time I was relieved to only have one ft that hadnt hatched. The others were either infertile (bought in) or only just started.
Oddly there were two sets of infertile eggs..and both were wyandottes. One bought in 5/6 infertile, one my own barred banties 4/6 infertile. Mind you these were from the first eggs she laid, so they may improve. Not a nice job but invaluable learning curve.

What jobs do you hate most?

No question: dispatch. I hate it so much and I have never, ever got used to it.

Don't have an issue with dispatch of a grown bird for the pot. Don't like culling a chick. Also don't like opening unhatched eggs, but as Hilly says it's a job that needs to be done so you can find out what went wrong.

'orrible jobs unrelated to chickens include clearing up sick (from animal or human!) and cat/dog poo - yucky yucky yuck! Give me chook poo any day.

I've just cleaned the girls out and sprayed the coop with Smite. I'd rather do that a thousand times than have the cockerels culled. I still think about them every day and feel I let then down in not finding them good homes.
