Well what else can we call the new chicken house, Elvis is going to live there! I've decided to give the interior of the nest box another coat of paint, this time in a deeper colour to make it darker in there, then it's done. One final thing though, I've read somewhere that if you paint your perches with a coat of one part paraffin to two parts vegetable oil it prevents red mite. Is this true? Has anyone tried it? Wouldn't it make them a bit difficult to hold on to? I've visions of going there in the morning and finding them all hanging upside down like bats because they've slipped round in the night, but anything that helps prevent the dreaded mite has to be worth a go, hasn't it?

If it's onto bare wood it should soak in? Give it a go on some off-cuts, or a bit of pallet if you have any, then you can see what happens

How about just putting it on the ends of the perches if they're removable as that's where the red mite lurk. You could also put it on the under side as they lurk there too but the chooks wouldn't have to touch the stuff then.
Otherwise you could rename the hut "The Belfry"!Comment
