  • Feeling guilty

I need to do the deed. I have a sick chook that's on her last legs but I can't bring myself to put her out of her misery, despite being brought up by a game keeper. It's not that I can't do it, more that I feel guilty about her being ill in the first place.

She was injured by one of the other girls and I missed it, by the time I spotted it she'd got an awful infection, which I cleaned up (couldn't afford the vet even if we had one who knew about chooks) and thought I'd got rid of. She was alright for months and has been laying daily then suddenly, in the past couple of days she's hardly moved and the infection has come back. Her back end is rock solid, like a lump of wood. I think it's necrosis (sp?) and she really does look like she's about to go.

Not after any advice or anything, it's too late I think, just rambling and gearing myself up to put her out her misery.

Sad thought. Best wishes. It's not something I'd like to have to do, but it's probably for the best.

Oh dear- doesn't sound too hopeful does it?

You know you'll do the deed if she needs it.

We felt a sad calm after OH sent Lily off to chookville- and we felt guilty we hadn't sorted out her problem over about 5 weeks( esp now cos I'd at least have tried vitamin suppliments having researched more into her problem)
But it was best for her at that time- I have no doubt.

Hope it goes OK for you- tis never a pleasant thing to have to do

      * big hug* xx

I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that it needs doing and I'll probably do the deed tonight, though I'll wait until youngest child has gone to bed.

          {{{hugs}}} from me too.
We had a slightly similar thing with Marigold just a few weeks ago.I felt that I'd perhaps kept her going for a little longer than she deserved, but when the time came it had to be done.
We found someone to do the deed for us...there's no shame in admitting you can't do it and roping someone else in to do it for you.
If there is nobody you can ask then all the best.xxx

Awww, it's never an easy task.

I remember having to dispatch Asbo when she was very poorly, and haven't had the heart to do it again yet!
I got a lovely neighbour who has done the honours for twice now since then, but I am learning to cope with better each time.
The last one died on my lap (can't believe i've lost 4 this year) and until then I had never been able to touch a dead chook (unless it's already been prepared for cooking - but that's a different story).

Try and find a friend to do it for you, I wish you well if you have to do it yourself.
Just keep telling yourself it's for the best, it don't seem so bad with that thought in the back of your mind. ((((BIG HUGS)))

I felt horrible having to put a sparrow out of it's misery a few weeks ago, a small bird I didn't even know. You have my utmost respect.

              Not easy.

It turns out I didn't need to do the deed. She was just as I left her when I got home but when I looked ten minutes later she was dead.

Thanks for the good vibes though folks.

A relief... we all get that

You clearly were aware that things needed 'sorting'

Poor little thing though...glad it's over for her

..just keep an eye on the others
