  • Feeders and Drinkers

    Hi,

It's been a while since I last brought feeders and drinkers for my chickens.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the treadle feeders and whether they were any good at reducing wastage and reducing vermin?

Also, I've only ever had galvanised metal ones before, are plastic just as good?

    All views and thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks

Snadger made his own and BB uses one. I think it stops the rats eating half your food so worth the investment or the time you spend to make your own.

I use mostly galvanised feeders. the plastic ones are ok but several have broken over the years...the metal ones last forever. some great links here -

Hi I might not be much of help as I only have 2 chooks atm and I don't have treadle feeder but I do use the plastic dome type, they were pretty pants on the floor of the coop, they were always kicking up the straw into both the feeder and drinker , jumping on top of the feeder and kicking the lid off, pooping into their food.. and somehow tipping their water everywhere. I would have 2 fill it every morning and afternoon..BUT since hanging them up I haven't had a prob with either!

I have a treadle feeder and wouldn't go back to the other sorts - and I've tried most over the years.

Thanks, went for the treadle in the end. Now just to soften the clang every time it opens and closes.

The clang is there to scare the rats away...........................

Its doesn't clang much when its full of feed. The chooks are quite gentle getting on and off the treadle.

I have a spring feeder based on a pheasant feeder. I have the spring fastened to a plastic drum suspended from the run roof. Its under a covered portion so never gets wet. It easily holds a 25Kg bag of layers pellets or mixed corn. Only need to feed chooks about every 10 days.
