  • Elvis Sings!

After three silent weeks, Elvis finally found his voice this morning... And what a voice it is! Ever heard a cockerel sound like he's got a 60-a-day habit? Trouble is he's so proud of it......so, so, proud. He started by doing more crows in 30 seconds than he'd done in all the rest of his life put together, then continued on, and on.....and on. Coco looked really confused, I think he'd half convinced himself that Elvis was a hen, though admittedly one who was somehow immune to his considerable charms. Poor lad, he only managed one crow himself, just to show Elvis how it should be done, then wandered off and pretended to be really interested in the food hopper.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Good lad him! Can you market the records though - or do you need a Colonel Parker!

We had been considering running a book on whether he produced a crow or an egg. He's developing lovely feathers now though, y'know the ones that hang down either side of the back (saddle feathers?). Anyway, being white and separated by a thinner black stripe they're starting to look like strings of pearls. He's developing into quite a handsome lad. My friend who is an artist saw them both for the first time last night, she's taken loads of photos and is considering doing some sort of project. I thought this was a cool idea, until she asked me to save all their feathers when they moult.

It's lovely hearing my two 'at it' as well!!
It often starts with one of them..then the other joins in....and then they sort of finish together.
Then if they hear one of the nearby cockerels- 1/2 mile away - returning their call then they start off again!!!

I often know when one of the gals has flown over the top of the fencing to lay an egg elsewhere cos they keep on calling to her ( yup..Betty again)

Sometimes when the girls do their "I'm about to lay an egg..going to go in and do it now..guess what I've just done" routine, they'll both join in with the SAME call as the mom!!..how strange!!!

I've already got her Flum! Collected her on the way home last night...she's lovely...a black copper maran this time. She's being bullied something awful today, but I believe in leaving them to it. UNLESS...they get O.T.T

They tend to just jump around a bit though, so we should be ok. I'll get pics of her when I charge my camera again!

Still working on a name - we're going down the line of famous black woman, with her being a black copper maran (hope that was PC enough, looks harsh written down!) so far we've short-listed...Nina, Tina, Shirley, Grace, Joan or Dolores. Ideas on a postcard if anyone can add to it!

We're getting copper marans on Saturday (Coco is one too, we believe) being a French breed we were thinking of French names, but OH was insisting on Emmanuelle - you'd have to have been around in the 70s to know why that's not a good idea, so we're probably going to stick with plan A, which is Terry Pratchett witches.

he's definitely at least part copper black, his mum was a maran as was elvis's (they were both from lovely dark chocolate eggs) though they were a mixed flock, .... so he may be all copper black or he may be crossed
