Default Egg Rotation

Hi there,

Does anyone have any ideas for rotating eggs? We have 6 chickens and when they all start laying we could get >40 a week. I thought about writing the date on the eggs, but as the eggs are porous I'd be worried about nasty chemicals getting into the eggs.

Kind regards

Tracey

Just write it on with a pencil, most people I know do this and they're all still alive! Pencils are just graphite (carbon) anyway, same as burnt toast, more or less. More likely to do you good if any gets through the shell, which is unlikely in any case.

Try putting them in trays and labelling the tray with the date.

We tend to lose pecils, or the dogs chew them!! Have used all sorts of stuff to write on eggs including magic markers and eyeliner
not done any harm that I know of yet!
Pencil best though if you don't have hounds that are shameless thieves.

I keep quails and at peak get around 50-60 eggs a week.
All I do is make trays from folded cardboard, with enough length/space in one V shaped division for about 10 eggs.. and 7 divisions.

Lable divisions Monday through Sunday. Save eggs accordingly. Use ditto,.

Requires no work after setting up and so simple even I when full of g&t can do it...:-)

Keep the pencil balanced in the egg tray - that's what I do - pencils are fine in the fridge!

Oh yeah, start collecting egg boxes from everyone - you will have loads of eggs to give away/sell later in the year!

Eggs can be frozen, separate the yolk from the white, beat the yolks with a little salt or sugar (make sure you lable clearly) salt for savoury use and sugar for sweet, then freeze in ice cube trays, whites in one and yolks in another, decanting to bags according to type - the eggs are then fine for use in cooked dishes, just use as required.

Thanks for the info., I didn't realise I could freeze the eggs. Is it necessary to add sugar or salt before freezing. Have you tried it without?

Kind regards

Tracey

I haven't had enough surplus eggs to have to try! It's amazing how many 'friends' appear from nowhere once you have hens!
