Does anyone have any idea for an alternative dust bath - my two cuckoo marans are skidding about in the mud, I wondered about giving them a washing up bowl full of sawdust or something? Also, I'm worried they're a bit bored - i tie up cabbages but they destroy them within an hour! Anyone have any longer term entertainment ideas? I could maybe rig up a TV and show them Chicken Run, but it might give them ideas....

I wouldn't use Sawdust Kate. What you could use is Kiln dries sand & put a bit of Mite posder in it & mix it well in. Then you need to keep it dry otherwise they'll end up like statues .

When I had my Chooks I had a winter & summer run. The winter one was just loads of concreting sand (about 1/2 a ton) rotavated into the soil to give really goo drainage & then bricks laid ontop of this. & then I used to put straw on this. The run had a cover over it so that kept the rain out.

Then I had a seperate pop hole trough to their summer run which had grass & shrubs in for them to charge around in.

If you've got a big greenhouse you could always over winter them in there

Hi kate, try play sand mixed with compost, and if you put some wood chips in the run it will help, not bark chips though as they can hold fungal spores that aren't good for chooks. Good luck
