  • Desperate for more girls

I'm finding it really hard to get some more hens. I'm down to 4 ex-batts and 1 Welsummers and really want a couple more posh girls. I was hoping for something like Blackrocks or anything really but can't believe how difficult it is to find some. A new supplier for Meadowsweet started up near me recently but I couldn't get new hens then as I one of my girls was ill with a fungal infection. Now all the girls are healthy I can't find someone with hens for sale. One of my batties is broody but I don't want to hatch again as I can't deal with the boys. (She's a wonderful mummy too) How can I find someone with hens for sale within about 20 miles of Bournemouth?

I'm in Dorset but on Hampshire border. I've Googled and looked in Bird trader.
              Thanks for offer.

Have you tried Bid4poultry.co.uk? Or you could try ebay sellers cos if they've got eggs the chances are they'll have growers? Thats how I've found several local breeders who are really close to me and I never knew they existed!

Rushes off to look at Bid4poultry. Nope, no-one near me. OH says, just get some eggs to stick under broody but I really don't want to go there again. I even know someone with fertile Welsummer eggs. It's so unfair, you would think in this day and age someone could sex eggs.

I downloaded an auction catalogue for an auction about 60 miles from me. This listed all sellers with breeds and addresses. I discovered someone has silver laced wyandottes not 3 miles from my work and I had no idea!

Oh Frias, it's a shame you are so far from me. I would happily hatch you some lovely Welsummers to order and keep the boys back so you got only girls. I'm sure there must be someone near you who can help.

Does your feed store have an ads board?
That's how we've found our local suppliers.
                            Good Luck.xxx

unless it is ex battery hens, people who sell chicken ussually sell trios of 2 hen 1 cockeral, so they can give the cockerals a chance, without having to cull them. it is an old country belief that eggs hatched early in the season will be predominantly hens, if you set some eggs later on, you should get more hens than cocks, it has always worked for me, and i ussually get a 3 to 1 ration of hen to cockeral.
