  • Daft question?

I know I've asked some daft things in the past, but I was thinking (in the middle of the night!) when does a pullet become a hen?

My chook book says when they are a year old they are 'officially' hens. Where, I wonder, do the books get their info, as each one differs.

So to expand the daft question, how long is a "laying season"? Is it after the first moult from when they first started laying, or a year from when they first started laying? Just got a bee in my bonnet about this today - and for no other reason than "I'd like to know"

Have a look under the Terminology section

Thanks RT That answers my question. Pullets are up to 1 year old and hens over 1 year old (according to Wikipedia anyway)

Anyone ever heard of broody pullet? Nor have I. If she has laid for a while and goes broody, she is a hen, whatever her age, otherwise yes, at about a year old.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
