    Coop Roof - Felt, Onduline, T&G or sheet ply?

    Trawling through E-bay for a new coop (sorry, Palace) for our 6 laydees, and the experiences we had last year with Red mite, what is the best material to go for?
    I know T&G/boards leads to lots of little nooks and crannies (that can be treated)
    Felt, I know from experience leads to a really big place for blighters to pro-create (and not so easy to treat!)

    What do folks recommend?

    Onduline is recommended to combat red mite!

      My houses all have T&G roofs and although I do get red mite they don't seem to be too much of a problem after a good spray with hot vinegar. It don't half burn if you get it on your hands!!!!

      Think what it does to the red mite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        If I was making one (no chance, OH won't consider keeping any now, but I did for years) I would use either exterior ply, well varnished on the outside, or Sterling Board (OSB) again varnished (or better still painted with bitumastic paint) on the outside. Coat the inside with Creosote Substitute ( whatever of that kind you can get) that soaks into the wood!
        Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

          i wouldnt use bitumastic as if it gets warm it can (not always) get onto your clothes etc. I would go for a rubberised paint seal instead that is more stable in the heat. apart from that i would tend to agree

            I was thinking like a Surveyor's assistant. Rubberised makes a waterproof layer on the surface, and that may encourage rot......
            You can buy Sterling Board (which I consider to be great stuff) with one face pre-treated with something rather like bitumastic....

              Gah, decisions decisions...
              Think I'm down to two coops now on eBay..
              1) 260440046603 - Pads4Pets - Onduline roof, screwed together (so I can dismantle and silicone between the panels), just not particularly easy to clean out (we go from the top on our current one)
              2) 250589795268 - P and T Poultry - all wood, but easier to clean out...

              It will be home for 6 laydees (and no more than that - we aren't allowed!)

              Thoughts/recommendations appreciated...

                such a good idea fellow french member!! hot vinegar it will be on my t and g but not in my g and t !!!!!
