  • Composting chicken poo??

Evening all! We are getting round to keeping chickens, have had some experience in the past when I didn't have an allotment. Was wondering, can you put shavings+poo mix on the compost heap??

Thanks for that, presumably just add it to all the other stuff, or do you compost it separately?

I add it to the heap - in fact it is the main part of my allotment heap! Produces quality stuff for nthe next year.

You can add it in moderate quantities to the other stuff and it will act as an activator - but if you find you have a lot, you should compost it separately, like horse manure. If you want to dig it in, it needs to be rotted down for a year or two, but in small amounts it can be scattered on the surface and left to weather - much as it would if the chooks were wandering your plot!

EDIT - I stand corrected by SueChooks! I guess it depends on the ratio of poo to bedding.

I put mine mixed in both compost heaps, but it normally ends up spread all over the garden after the girls have had a good scratch in it.
