  • Chiickens and soft fruit

Are there any soft fruit bushes that would survive the ravishes of chooks in a sealled run?
My Uncle used to have free range chooks and they never seemed to bother black currants, redcurrants and gooseberries?

Used to have mine in with a blackcurrant - they never touched them. Neighbours raspberries get decimated by theirs every year.
    Another happy Nutter...

I think it depends on the nature of your birds. My Dads are spoilt rotten but when they roam the garden they will go for anything (and I mean anything). My chickens tend to be fine around plants they are more content to scrab. My indian runner ducks only used to target lettuce but my Appleyard ducks are just as bad as my Dads chickens. Sorry that is no help at all

Also wonderd about apples and pears as I have some to plant SOMEWHERE rather than leave them on my old plot!

Would it be worth netting them Snadge?.............the bushes not the chooks.............

Apple pips contain cyanide so I suggest you collect windfalls?
My chooks eat the elderberries in their run.
After several years I read they are toxic to hens!...and turn the yolks a funny colour.....really? I don't think so...well not so far anyway!

I chuck the windfalls into the chooks all the time!
Mine are very partial to raspberries and will jump up for them, not sure about the other fruit as they tend to be more interested in eating green stuff than fruit when they're wandering round the garden.
