  • chicks hatch with strange sac thing

I've had two chicks hatch with a strange sac thing and a chord attached they seem a little week but are cheaping a little. does anyone have any ideas

I'm speaking from very little experience,so I could very well be wrong, but it sounds like they've not absorbed the little food sac that will keep them going for the first 24hrs or so???Don't know if these nutrients can be replaced by feeding them grated cooked yolk but sure it would be worth a try?
The one of ours that didn't hatch...pipped shell but 24 hrs later no progress, just bleeding through the shell...she still had her yolk sac intact...looked just like a little egg yolk & it was as if she were hugging it.
Hope some TLC can help them in their first few days!xx

have just pm'd you in response to other message - yolk shouldn't be attached by cord it should be the net of blood vessels (+ some membrane) that lines the inside of the egg during development - can mean chick is early..

I could be wrong about what it is with yours of course - but that approach has worked for me. With what I beleive to be the same situation..

Plus tlc I found I had to give one really weak one water drip at a time for the first 36hrs or so 'cos he was so weak...

eeek I've cut the chord no blood I have given them both a drink they took a little I don't have any eggs to feed them with(Broody hens not laying) The black one is moving around a little the yellow one is not moving much but is breathing and is quite active when you pick it up. Both the eyes are closed on them

Egg really is the best thing for them - even duck? A freind would give them cooked mince but I'm a little sqeamish about that (its not really allowed), but warmth and water (and preferably not being jumped on by healthy siblings) are the best things for them I had one at Christmas that OH and I were up turn about every couple of hours through the night to give it a drip of water 'cos it had its eyes shut and didn't lift its head - Its now the bully in my set of young cockerals and a good sized bird and healthy ..

The black one will be fine now still working on the little yellow one(not optimistic though) it took some water this morning and a bit of chick crumb. I will get some eggs today thats all I can do

Doesn't sound good WDZ but you are doing all you can. If chicks hatch "incompletely" like this survival rate is not good. As Corax says, egg is the best food for them (even supermarket!) Good luck!

I am sorry your little one died. It was a bit like our prem kitten, Sweetpea. You can only do your best, nature will have her way in the end.

                        Any more eggs hatched yet?

Sorry to hear he didn't make it, fingers crossed for the other one...

My first one has hatched - a wee Partidge Brahma I suspect a boy but have no real basis at this stage - he's very cute with yellow fluff all the waydown to his toes and ginger and blue colouring on his back... No2 Brahama a Lemon Pyle has pipped...
