whilst tidying up a seldom used cupboard this morning I found FOUR boxes of out of date vegetable suet! Now why I bought so many boxes is anybodies guess of course (!!), but nonetheless I now have 4 boxes and in true vine mentality, I cant quite bear to throw them out - do you think I can feed them to the chickens without any ill effects?

Make bird cake!

Melt the suet and mix in breadcrumbs, dried friut and sunflower hearts or what ever you have handy. Set the cake in lined tins and hang up for the birds.

If you used mealworms, sunflower hearts, dried fruit and layers ration it would make a good pecking block for your girls.

that was what i wasnt sure and i was planning to make a xmas pudding for my BIL's hamper and i didnt want to risk poisoning him if i could help it!

I understand your point though. I'm happy to use out of date store cupboard stuff on myself but not on family and friends, just in case.

I can't figure out what could be wrong with veg suet though.

I've just used it anyway after reading your post! one of them was use by Nov 2009 so i thought it was close enough to chance it....one of the others was May 2008!!!

Fat can go rancid - tastes a bit awful but the wild birds don't seem to mind so your chickens might not either.

Most of these Best before, are purley that, best before, after which it may not be as best quality. Drinks in cans for instance can be drunk for up to 2 years after their shelf life.

My OH used to get a xmas hamper every year with out of date beer, coke, tinned stuff etc and when I say hamper, like 80 cans of cola etc which was 1 month over, from his boss

Do miss it, but got a goose from the family who won it in a competition, so our lunch is now sorted
