  • Chicken Fact's and Trivia

Thought I'd post this as a light hearted manner of recording facts and Trivia relating to chooks. Personally I think point 27 should be enforced again
EDIT: this was garnered off the net, If you disagree with something, please remember that this is a light hearted thread and treat it as such. Thank you

Please feel free to add bit's I've missed off - Thanks

    1. A chickens' heart beats 280-315 times a minute.
    2. A chickens' body temperature normally runs at 102-103 degrees F.
    3. A rooster takes 18-20 breaths a minute, a hen 30-35.
    4. There are over 150 varieties of domestic chickens.
    5. Chickens are not capable of sustained flight.
    6. It takes a hen 24-26 hours to lay an egg.
    7. The latin name for chicken is Gallus Domesticus.
    8. Chickens come in an infinite variety of colors and patterns.
    9. Chickens lay different colored eggs, from white, to brown, to green, to pink, to blue.
    10. A chicken can have 4 or 5 toes on each foot.
    11. Grocery store chickens are 5-8 weeks old.
    12. A chicken takes 21 days to hatch.
    13. Chickens were domesticated about 8000 years ago.
    14. Americans consume 8 billion chickens a year.
    15. All domestic chickens can be genetically traced to Gallus Gallus, The Red Jungle Fowl.
    16. It takes 4 lbs.+ of feed to make 1 dozen eggs.
    17. The chicken was once considered a sacred animal symbolizing the sun. Breeds were developed to provide plumage for ceremonial costumes.
    18. The first Poultry Exhibition was held in the United States on November 14, 1849. There were 219 exhibitors, 1023 birds, and over 10,000 visitors.
    19. One trait, called Melanosis, causes chickens' bones, ligaments, skin and tendons to be colored BLACK.
    20. In 1925, hens laid an average of 100 eggs a year. In 1979, the World Record was set by a White Leghorn who laid 371 eggs in 364 days!!!
    21. A hen lives an average of 5-7 years, but can live up to 20 years. She'll lay eggs her entire life, with production decreasing every year from year one.
    22. An egg starts growing into a chick when it reaches a temperature of 86 degrees F.
    23. You can literally hypnotize a chicken by holding it and drawing a line in the dirt over and over. The chicken will stay still right there as long as you do this.
    24. Did you know that some breeds of chickens can lay coloured eggs? Sure enough, the Ameraucana and Araucana can lay eggs colored in shades of green or blue, depending on the breed and it's ancestry.
    25. In Fruita, Colorado, the town folk celebrate 'Mike the Headless Chicken Day'. Seems that a farmer named L.A. Olsen cut off Mike's head on September 10, 1945 in anticipation of a chicken dinner - and Mike lived for another 18 months WITHOUT A HEAD. Mike died from choking on a corn kernel.
    26. In Gainesville, Georgia - the chicken capital of the world - it is illegal to eat chicken with a fork!
    27. One punishment for an adulterous wife in medieval France was to make her chase a chicken through town naked. The source doesn't state whether it was the chicken or the wife who was naked.
    28. According to National Geographic, scientists have settled the old dispute over which came first -- the chicken or the egg. They say that reptiles were laying eggs thousands of years before chickens appeared, and the first chicken came from an egg laid by a bird that was not quite a chicken. That seems to answer the question. The egg came first.
    29. Chimney's used to be cleaned by dropping live chickens down them
    30. The closest living relative of the t-rex is the chicken which makes the phobia 'Alektorophobia' (Fear of chickens) slightly more plausible.

Very American! I bet there were poultry shows in Britain before that. I simply don't believe 25. I reckon ALL birds are pretty much as closely related as each other to Veloceraptor and similar creatures.

But as you say, all a bit of fun.....

I'd heard/read about the headless chicken story before. Apparently the owner used to exhibit it at the old fashioned freak shows. I can't remember how they fed it though, probably a tube in its neck
