  • building a coop/run

I've got a big old (and pretty manky) shed at the bottom of my garden. I'm going to get rid of it to provide space for a decent veg plot, and was wondering how easy it would be to use the wood to build some raised beds, plus a chicken coop and run.

    Has anyone done this before?

Thousands upon thousand have done it (including me!) Just let your imagination run riot and be creative!
I used to build chicken coops when I was 12 years old out of tin sheeting on a wooden framework. I couldn't cut the tin sheet so I sunk it in the ground to deter foxes. I couldn't afford nails so I straightened rusty ones I pulled out of used timber.
My latest creation is an octagonal coop made from eight wooden doors.

If a 12 year old can do it, I'm sure you can manage it dragonaxe.

    Welcome to the vine btw!

I think dragonaxe was meaning the re-using or salvaging of his 'manky' shed as the raw materials for his new project?
I personally have built loads of coops/sheds and runs from salvaged materials with great success.
The only robots I remember as a nipper was me and my bruv running around with boxes on our heads shouting "EX--TERMINATE"

Did you use the good old plunger too
Im sure he didnt mean using a manky shed for a coop ( maybe he did ) still using it for raised beds shouldnt be a problem ,could last for this years growing

Well (not that anyone is the least bit interested, but it's my opinion anyway LOL! ), but I'm with 'Uncle Snadge' - re-use and recycle (maybe I'm strange...(no comments required on that one!)), anything that can be re-used is a bonus to this poor planet. I also think that the more we try to re-use things, or think up a second use for something (especially plastic, polystyrene or rubber) can only be a bonus!

Just make room on that soapbox for me to join you! ANY form of recycling is better than landfill, even if it is only using junk mail as firelighters!

OH yes I did!!!! lol. It's not totally manky. some of the side panels are a bit rotten. but there's loads of large chipboard panels making up the roof! so once I strip it down (trying not to kill myself in the process ) there's no chance I'm throwing it away!! (I'm with you there Glutton4)

oh, and fantastic pics dave! I'm in awe. exactly what I'm trying to do

                  thanks for the feedback folks

When you said Manky I Just had pictures in my head of some of the sheds down the allotments up the road ,Its sad to see but pritty funny at the same time (if im up there this week il take a pic ) most have 3 sides with the roof caved in ,And would be out of the question to use as a hen house why i said about using it for borders/raised beds.
If its ok then go for it and i cant wait to see the finished pics
                    Good luck with it

hey, with my experience, the residents of downtown soweto will be complaining that it makes the neighbourhood look shabby and will stop phil and kirsty from recommending it as a hot-spot!! lol
