  • Bossy Chicken has gone :(

I got home today and found Bossy Chicken AKA Mrs Beeton dead by the door of the shed

Not really sure what's happened to be honest. I'd been treating them all for lice for a week, as we'd had an outbreak, and had noticed that she was a bit slower over the weekend. However, she was still eating and drinking.

She was one of my original hens, so was about 2.5-3 years old. The old girls had stopped laying regularly, so can't be sure she didn't have an egg-problem.

Then of course, we had the earthquake today, so that could have been enough to send her over the edge?

Anyway, when I found her, all the other hens were with her, even though it was raining hard, and they'd usually be in the shed.

I shall remember her for being incredibly bossy, greedy, nosey, noisy and a pain in the bum when I was cleaning or tidying up in the run. The traits of a perfect chicken.

    Goodbye Bossy Chicken

i'm just getting used to the fact that they can die on you quite suddenly....i've only ever had cats as pets and my last one lived til he was over 20 so having chickens die when they are only 3 years old or whatever means you have to not get too'fond' of them..........altho you still do.......havent properly named my latest ones...............

Sorry to hear that, the thing is with chickens, they don't let on they're not feeling too good all the time so you never know. It's lovely that her friends stayed with her though isn't it

Thats very sad, but you'll always remember her character. Many people say chickens are stupid - I disagree, they all have their own personality.

Aw, sad. But apparently quick. Mine haven't the sense to come in out of the rain anyway but that was a nice thought, that they stayed with her.

Sorry to hear that OWG. Heart attacks are not uncommon in chickens. Sounds like she had a brilliant life though. I'm having trouble with my favourite hen at the moment too - she prolapsed after laying an egg a few days ago and is still not right

Oh no, it must be awful to lose one of your first like that.
