  • BIG Birds this time!

I've been worried all day about putting my Laydees out in their summer quarters in the Paddock. I had convinced myself that they would be fine, after all, we get Foxes in the garden but they've kept away from the Leccy fence so far!. Then Auntie Mo posted her thread and I started worrying.

Anyway! DH came home this evening with the news that a good friend of ours has been given eight Geese. He only wanted two. One (very short) conversation later, and four of them are mine, Daddy, Mummy and two Babies - Yippeeee!

    Whad'ya think?

lol and? is that reason enough not to get more chickens? LOL Congrats .... suppose next you'll be getting runner ducks and Turkeys

Obviously the piccies are required when posting news like this

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

That's my theory too. I've been 'Googling' info and re-reading old issues of CS (I can dream ), so I now figure that a real family with a Dad at the helm would be good.

Transportation may be the issue. They're only two miles away, but I don't fancy them on my leather seats

I had already thought of Turkeys, but maybe Geese instead - have to see how these are received yet. Remember my folks are away !

Would geese really see foxes off????...now that would be useful !!! (***see Nicos getting ideas!!!!)

When we got our electric fence , the guy said to put honey on the metal wire at fox nose height- -at various points along the way- so when they come to investigate they'll soon discover it's best to leave things be!!!

I thought I heard our foxes barking in the field last night , and esp got up to see what was going on. (Didn't want to have the same experience as Auntie Mo)

Turned out it was the hunting dogs housed in a field nearby being disturbed by something ( probably a sanglier- wild boar-??)

It does make you worry doesn't it????

Glutton4- is the paddock fully electrified???...are the geese likely to fly out????

I think all you can do is have a go- and just do your best for the safety aspect!....my gut feeling is they'll be fine within an enclosed, electrified area!!

                ..oooo...how lovely!!!!

One reason geese are a good idea is they are so NOISY about intruders (foxy, human or any other kind). A proper bolshy gander is a great fox-deterrent, and anyone within hearing range will know all about it if the geese see any sort of unwelcome visitor approaching.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

                            OK, update time.

I got the four youngsters, hatched last summer. I didn't like the look of Dad, mean-looking and aggressive. Didn't look in his prime either, in fact, he didn't look that healthy. Decided to leave Mum with Dad as they are a breeding pair, and they have two other offspring with them.

Off to clean out heaps of goose-pats from my car now. Will post a piccy later.

Here they are - a little shy at the moment!

I'm reliably informed they need nothing but Grass this time of year, but do like to get wet, so we made them a bath/pond out of an old Land Rover roof we had laying around (as you do!). Filled it up, and as soon as we retreated they were in it splashing around like, well, Geese!
