  • Beak trimming: came across this report

    Hi All,

I thought I would share this with our chicken friends as this seems extremely harsh and cruel, anyway, there is a link for people wishing to email DEFRA to urge them to reconsider the postponement of the ban

A new report from Compassion in World Farming calls for an end to the beak trimming of laying hens and provides strong scientific evidence for why the UK ban on this mutilation should go ahead in 2011. Find out more at Compassion in World Farming - Science backs the beak trimming ban

tthat sucks ... i had 3 ex batts with trimmed beaks ... and they still attacked the others and plucked feathers and pecked them ... and that was in a large run, can't see that it works too well anyway

I noticed that they are now allowing you to sign on online petition to convince the labour government to uphold the ban in 2011,

      Please sing it......

I never knew about any of this before having my own chickens and I have to say more publicity is needed!!!!

Some of my ex-batts have trimmed beaks Poor things, they're not bolshy or aggressive or anything other than "sweet little old ladies". It's a cruel barbaric practice and unfortunately my MP won't sign any of the petitions I ask him to! He said it's because of his "role in Parliament". Hopefully that'll change if/when he gets voted out!!!

Sick isn't it! I actually worry when the weather is bad and my girls can't get to run around in the large garden we have, despite having a good size run! Makes me angry!

the thing is without this pressure they will be able to continue past 2011.

I found a beak protector for 30p each, saves trimming the beaks but then is you have thousands of chickens that one hell of a lot of money.

It all goes hand in hand, better welfare in bigger spaces they wouldnt need to peck hell out of each other.

the link is for an online petition, so anyone can add there name to it, and you dont have to worry that your MP wont sign!

Hmm, probably opening a can of worms here... but...

I'm in two minds about this. Beak trimming might be a necessary evil where hens are kept in close confinement, as surely the harm that comes from feather and vent pecking when hens are bored is greater than the harm done by beak trimming. Pecked hens, with nowhere to go, can easily be killed by their fellow cage mates. I would prefer to see all hens with ample space to run around outside and not be bored and stressed, but if that can't happen because people won't pay the extra for the eggs, then I would prefer to see beak trimming with regulation but not banned. It's not like chopping off a finger and the birds can still feed and drink.

I've had 2 lots of ex-batts and neither lot had their beaks trimmed, so some 'farmers' don't think it's necessary. I'd like to see it banned along with hens being kept in confined cages and barns. Trouble is, even if it's ever banned here it won't be in all countries and the eggs will simply get imported because they'll be cheaper.

I agree with you totally Birdie Wife. We had an aggressive Rhodie once that had to have her beak trimmed. She lived out in a large grass enclosure so no space issue but was just mean to the other hens. Trimming her beak did her no harm and stopped her hurting the others.

Thanks Tick, I've done it too

If beak trimming/clipping is absolutely necessary (as in the case of Richmondhens) then ok, so be it. But if it's just done for convenience or "just in case" then I still think it's all wrong

I would agreed with this comment, but i understand it is painful act for the bird. The farmer where my ex batts came from does not see fit to beak trim, so they had there beaks in tact.
Having seen one without its beak, and seeing the state it was in I would say it wasnta ahppy affair for that chuck.
