Default wormery

DIY Wormery

I'm thinking about trying to build my own wormery - has anyone else got one or done it, if so what would you recommend - any good advice for a beginner?

I considered the DIY womery 2 years ago and even bought the stackable tubs I would need. But as I was going to locate it in my garage and I didn't want worm wee or kitchen waste all over the floor I decided against DIY (or should say I had no confidence in my DIY skills) and bought Can o'Worms. Though they are not cheap they do work and I still have the worm feed and acid neutaliser supplied as part of the kit.

Someone is offering a wormery on our local freecycle. Not sure whether I could cope with it or not as I have a bit of a worm phobia. Anyone else overcome that type of problem? Should I give it a go?

If it's freecycle then it'll cost nowt

I use an old fork to move/catch worms: usually when they are in the lid. I sited mine in the garage and I have a desk lamp over it which i switch on before opening the lid. The worms don't like the light so will burrow down. I don't have a phobia about worms (just snakes!) but I rarely have had to touch a worm in over two years.

Go for it!!!

Cheers nilling. If it is still on there when we get our internet connection back up and running I might just give it a try then.

Yes. I get the OH to do it!

We've got a Can-o-worms and the stackability makes it just so easy to deal with, don't get an all in one job.

I've had a Can-O- Worms wormery for a couple of years now. Our local council had an offer on at the time and it only cost £30 for the whole kit. The worms didn't arrive and I had to start it off with worms from an existing wormery.

Top Tip! Don't put in ANY cooked material, bread, pasta etc. I tput in some bread and other cooked food and I upset the worms big time, they all headed down into the liquid and died! I had to empty it all out, clean it down and restart the whole wormery from scratch. Its working a treat now and produces about 1L+ of worm juice per week.

Happy worming

My top tips:

- don't put in any citrus fruit (lemons, limes and oranges) or potato peelings (as they grow in the bin)

- worms love melons

I often put a bit of pasta or bread in my wormery, always dry without any sauce and they love it. They also really love mashed potato, always the first thing to go! It's also OK to put a bit of citrus in, just don't do too much in one go. Re th potato peelings, if you don't want them sprouting then blast them in the microwave first!

Why are wormerys so dear to buy? They are only glorified plastic tubs. I'm considering building my own as it's the only option available to me at the moment. Just been made redundant so buying a wormery is not high on the agenda. So has anyone made their own? If so how did you go about it?

Another thing to consider, they say you can put the contents of your vacuum cleaner in the wormery but if you have a cat/dog, then any flea preparations can also go in with the worms.

Kills them, I know I did that to my first lot.

Don't forget they'll be slowing down in the colder weather so slow the feeding accordingly.
