    Winter Pansies

    I have just received a lovely box - and more - of winter pansies, plug plants. I have potted them on to grow bigger roots, and in a week or so I reckon they will be ready. Even though they are WINTER flowering, how do they cope in severe weather? id est, cold. As the border where they are due to be planted is about 18" (sorry, only think in old money) and goes straight onto the pavement. We have a number of small school children that walk next to this, i have wondered if fleece is sensible. (Visions of these youngsters peering underneath to see what's there and not putting it back.) Maybe I am being too being to gloomy.

    I've always had more success with violas than with pansies, myself.

    Neither of them will actually flower in the coldest months, but they'll get going again in early spring

      pansies are very hardy and although they don't look as they are doing very much during the winter months, they spring into life (scuse the pun) and give a longlasting show in the early months of the year .

        Thanks folks. I have since been told that violas are a better option. Well, that's a project for next autumn.
