  • Will pulling out weeds between my carrot seedlings attract the carrot fly?

    Evening,

As the title suggests I read somewhere that you should thinly sow carrot seeds to avoid having to separate the seedlings and attract the 'he shall not be named' fly, so I thought would weeding do the same?

Anything you do that disturbs the foliage of the carrots will attract the nameless fly Samuel, and the little bu@@ers seem to smell them out even when you don't.

Best thing is to cover them with fleece or enviromesh, lift off to weed and promptly replace.

Unfortunately yes, I was told it was best to thin my carrots a night after the flies have gone to bed so the same should apply to weeding.

Whatever you do though invest in enviromesh and keep the covered as RL suggest. I have covered them for the last couple of years and not had a problem.
