This poor shrub was badly damaged by frost two winters ago and hasn't recovered. It was largely ignored last year but I'm paying more attention to things now. Will it ever come good or do I shred it?

I think it is unlikely the regrow from the brown side. If you wanted to keep it I guess it could be planted out with the damaged side towards a fence and then you won't see it! -
You should never, never, ever cut into brown wood when you prune conifers (although I take it yours was frosted).
Round here, people have planted all their hedges far too close to the boundary (the pavement) and then have to prune hard every year to stop their hedge swallowing the pavements. Yeah it was frost damage, I had two and the other one died off completely. It's a pity because they're a nice little shrub.
I guess I'll have to find a corner for it somewhere.Comment

I'd not bother replanting it. Have you considered finding some strong new shoots and trying to get some cuttings started? Deffo worth a go.Just go for it..Comment

my mum had one in worse condition a few years ago and was going to throw it, so i stopped her and planted it out of the way somewhere so you couldn't see that it was dead (in her opinion) couple of years later and its alive and kicking all green, my opinion is plant it out in the ground and leave it to do its own thingComment
