Bamboo grows to its full height in the first year and then builds up the wall thicknesses over subsequent years, so you would need three year old canes - the colour at the base should be darker.

When cut the stems are still full of liquid so once cut you could bundle them up with the leaves still on and stand them for the leaves to wilt to use up the water, then cut off the leaves trim to length and allow to dry.

You could also put a dab of coloured paint at the bottom of each new shoot, using a different colour each year so in three years time you know all the red ones are old enough.

Oh this stuff has been out there ever since we moved in, so over 4 years, so hopefully some of it will be good enough. Might cut a few canes and try drying them out see hiw they turn out

Yeh thats wat i was planning on doin....do u dru it first? Or is it still green?

I cut them and put them somewhere dry until I'm ready to use them. Sometimes I cut them and use immediately if I need one in a hurry!
Drying is better as they firm up.
Save the leafy tops and use them for pea supports.

Thanks alot. I will go out and cut some and leave them to dry until i need them
