  • White Fly's in Compost Bin - Is this normal ??

Good afternoon all, hope everyone is OK.

The last few days whenever i've taken the lid off the compost bin to pop something in it - hundreds of white fly's have flown into my face - yuck!

Is this normal to have this many white fly in there and if not what can I do about it - is there an organic spray I can blast them with?

    Many thanks in advance.

It might mean the contents are a bit too acidic (I think!). You could hoover them up, or just leave the lid off for a while, let them disperse, and have a look at the contents of the bin to see if it needs more or less of something to make it 'work' better (she said vaguely...)

if these are fruit flies (and is sounds like they are) then they are harmless and just part of the decomposing process.

As Sweepster says, lift your lid and let 'em clear off, but they will be back - I open my lid facing away from me - slowly, they don't take long to clear off

Yes, they're pretty common in compost bins. They're a nuisance and no more. It helps if the composting material is layered over with earth or other brown material at regular intervals. You can buy organic bug sprays if you want to try that but it will only get rid of the ones that are there and then you'll get the next crop.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I've started finding fruit flies in my nursery room. (This is the new name for the room my husband has designated me for all things plant related. Seedlings/ propagators/ potting on blah blah)

Will these do any harm? I was gonna put my venus flytrap in there!
