where's my garlic ?

I planted some garlic cloves ages ago immediately forgot about them and didnt mark them - yeah, I know, lesson learned... then in the same bed I put lots of ornamental alliums. Doh !
Now I cant tell which is my garlic and which are just pretty !
Is there any way to tell from above ground which is the real garlic ?
If I dig them up, will edible garlic bulbs look different to ornamental allium bulbs ?
If I got it wrong would we be poisoned ?
Shall I just forget about it for this year and start over (properly) ?!
Any advice welcome (apart from the obvious 'buy labels and use them')

Have a firkel round the base of the plants and you should tell garlic if not cut of a bit of a leaf and sniff it you will tell garlic if not taste it that is the only way i can think of or wait for every thing to die back in the autumn and then look what you have got good luck....jacob
