  • When will my tomato/cucumber plants need to be supported with bamboo canes?

    Morning all,

I put my young tomato/cucumber plants in a couple of days ago and I was just wondering when I would need to start providing them with support?

Also are bamboo canes suitable to support cucumber plants? I would imagine that the plant would get quite heavy so I would need maybe some metal poles fixed together to do the job?

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

Sam, hi I'm in my first year growing anything and have grown some cucumbers and tomatoes.

I have found canes pushed in the ground about 6-8 inches have supported my plants with no issues at all. I have used normal garden twine to secure the plants to them.

The pic shows them all sturdy I've also put string across the uprights in the greenhouse but you could do the same between 2 outside posts.

Get your supports in now Samuel. I always put mine in at the same time as the plants.

An ordinary bamboo cane is supporting my cucumber fine but I've got bamboo scaffolding in for the melons on the right.
