  • When should I re-pot these willows?

I've got a couple of willows and at some point, need to transfer them to bigger pots. I've attached a photo of them currently and the pot they're going into.

I'm just wondering at what point I should be thinking to re-pot? Are they still looking too small or is now about right? They are still growing so I don't think they've filled the current pot yet. If I remove from the current pot the roots are starting to fill around the edges but I wouldn't say it's severe yet, should I wait until the roots are completely covering the outside of the soil?

    Thanks!

That new pot is far too big to transfer a small cutting into.

You need to pot on gradually - something between the two sizes would be better. What compost are you using?

Ok thanks, I did wonder if it was too big, but was given that and the willow at the same time by a friend so thought it may have been ok.

I haven't bought compost yet, anything you can recommend?

Wait until you can area few roots poking through the holes in the bottom. A clear sign they are looking for more space! As RL said you need to move them up into a pot which is a little bigger.

Thanks that makes sense! I'll leave them in the smaller pot until the roots appear out the bottom and will buy a new pot mid-size of the two instead of going straight into the larger ones, thanks!
