    Whats eating them ?

    My Radishes that is....

    I have one row of radish up, two varieties, one half is just stalks left, all the leaf has gone, and the other variety looks like they have just been started on, little pin prick holes in some leaves, and the edges just starting to show small signs of been munched.

    Thought it may be flea beetle but this really is just a stab in the dark.

    Any ideas, Regards, Rob.

    Flea beetle holes or slugs, the ones that have dissapeared. A soft string soaked in something smelly, I used to use the old ***** fluid, will deteer the flea beetle and slug pellets for the others.

      Dont think its slugs as i have been keeping an eye on that and have been using pellets as and when needed.

      Whats the soft string all about, never heard that one, whats the best thing to soak it in then ?

        Rob, bit of a strange one. The weather at the moment is ideal for slugs, but with all the rain not good for flea beetle. The bad news that some people plant radish as a 'trap plant' to lure flea beetle away from more valuable crops. Any chance of a pic?

            Thanks, am certain its not slugs, i have several traps around the garden to monitor them, as well as pelleting regulary when needed, also the tiny little holes look nothing like slug damage, (worked on arable farms for many years).

            I will deffo get some pictures tomorrow if this sodding rain lets me out in the garden for 5 minutes !

            Am gutted to hear people use radish as a bait crop, they are one of me faves along with carrots..onions..garlic...beet...peas.....oh well, guess i got plenty left for me if the worst comes to it and i lose this row.

              Flea beetles just eat little holes in the leaves - making them unsightly. They don't eat the radishes. You can sometimes see them jumping up if you brush the leaves. Sticky stuff on a flat board brushed along the rows was an organic way of catching the beggars. Not that I ever bothered.

                  Snadger your bang on the money with that one, popped in today after work and walked in just in time to see a woody walking up the row of radish and pecking away.

                  Mmmmm, dont think the nieghbours will like a 12 bore going off, might have to get the pcp out, quite fancy pigeon breast for breakfast this weekend.

                        The string soaked in anything that is smelly and reteins the smell confuses the flea beetle and they go elswherebut the new Jayed fluid is no longer smelly enough.
