  • What's the difference between growbags and compost?

I am about to repot some tomato plants which have got huge and was wondering, waht's the difference between bags of compost and growbags?

I only have a little balcony garden so everything is in pots.

What would be best to buy - a grow bag or a sack of compost?

My tomatoes in the(small) greenhouse are in pots of compost & are growing quite well!
The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

I have a load of tomatoes planted in growbags I have cut in half this gives more root depth and hold the water better than the usual way of planting up growbags

Growbags are very similar to multi-purpose compost. Buy whichever is cheaper, they both work well

Mine are in flower buckets in a mix of grow bag stuff and multi purpose compost and they are taller than me now! (Admittedly I'm quite short!)

I was planning to do them all in buckets with the stuff from the grow bags but realised after filling one I wouldn't have enough so just mixed it with MPC.

I don't think there's any difference Nickerly. I think the difference is just in the shape of the bag. I don't like growing in grow bags as in the shape they come in watering is difficult and it's hard to stake anything. I buy them because they are of a weight I can move about and then I take the compost out and use it in pots.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I think in the old days, growbags had half compost and half manure; but after the growbags I had this year which were no more than shredded paper in places I have no idea what goes in either of them; apart from a shed load municipal waste by the looks of it.

I never buy compost, just use the contents of growbags from our local gardening association instead. It seems to work just fine and is cheaper.

I have used both growbags and compost and had no difference in results, in the my greenhouse I use builders buckets ( b&Q cheap ones) and compost, the advantage using buckets is that they are deeper for the roots

You can sleep in a grow bag.
