  • What is this plant?

I am sure that it came from seeds I bought. I thought it was going to be a brussel sprout, however I have spoken to several people and they say it isn't. So if it isn't a brussel sprout, what is it??

    Many thanks, Zenithtb

It is a brassica that has gone to seed....so could well be a brussel but it looks like brocolli to me...

So where on the plant would the brocolli (bit you eat) be? Does it 'exist' yet? The problem is I got frustrated with nothing growing, so seeded a bit of everything. 3 weeks later it went nuts, so I had to keep moving plants to spare pots I had, and now (as a new gardener) I do not know what is growing where and cannot identify anything :-)

That plant won't produce anything now....broccollis [calabrese] usually have a main stem and purple sprouting broccollis have flower stems that you eat before they actually flower, but that looks like it hasn't developed properly and has shot straight to seed. They usually like really heavy soil, so if you grow them in pots you need to stamp the soil down - so I think it would be the pot that is too small for it.

Ooooh. OK - many thanks! Shame I live in a flat with only a 3 x 1m balcony. With luck my beans and peas will do better - my oranges look unhappy, but my grape is perking up. Just got some blackberries, raspberries and gooseberries. Where shall I put them lol!!!!

Personally, I'd forget trying to grow brassicas on a balcony - I've got a lottie and I'm cutting right down on brassicas...they are just too much like hard work.

Peas, beans, grapes and those fruit sound ideal!!!

Wow! That's amazing - it just goes to show how little space you actually need to grow fruit and veg.

PS, I was going to type something else, but it was a definate double entendre!!

What a super idea! I would love to do that - maybe it would inspire other 'space constrained' ppl like me :-) Watch this space!

                    You're a very nice person!

                          Blasphemy!

They are a lot of work - but not much else grows in winter, and besides, we love them! Definitely not worth growing on a balcony, though...
