  • What I am growing

    Hi everyone,
I am quite new and have posted a few questions and enjoying reading the advice and posts.

    What are you all growing?

So far I have got started the following:

Tomatoes, Gardeners delight, Tanya and Tumbling
    Leeks, French Beans,
    Lettuce, little gem, mixed leaves
    Radish, spring onion, beetroot
    2 Pumpkins
    Yet to emerge
    Baby carrot
    Squashes
    Courgettes

I like most salad and veg and I was wondering if I have missed any easy crop that I should have got started by now.

    Any tips appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi BumbleB

What space do you have to grow in?

Some pieces you could be starting now are broccolli, cabbages and cauliflowers and maybe purple sprouting broccoli for next year, not to mention potatoes and onions (Shallots et al)

      toms - a variety
      cucumbers
      garlic, onions
cos lettuce, mizuna, mixed leaf salad, lollo rosso
coriander, tarragon, basil, oregano, strawbini, asparagus pea, chives, parsley, garlic chives, borage, sorrel, spinach, swiss chard, dill
      peppers, chillis, aubegines

      Yet do sow:
      melon
      sweetcorn
      dwarf purple beans
      french beans
      mangetout

        Hi, Thanks selfraising and Dave

You have got me thinking about other crops now. I have 5 raised bed areas that I had planned for salads, beans, squashes, herbs etc. It is working out how much room everything will need. I had avoided cabbages, brocolli etc (even though I love them) because I was not sure how much space and care they needed and also if they survive pigeons etc. I will look these up again and try to find some space.

Thanks your ideas certainly are helpfull.

The cabbage and brocolli will take more space than you initally thought. If you're goning to grow chillis, they they take a while to get going so you need to think about them too (started indoors) The pigeons, chickens and cabbage butterfly love brassicas, so you need to keep this in mind and be ready to protect them.

Potatoes? did not see any on your list

Try planting the cougettes on the edge of your raised beds and let them hang over the side.
          Perhaps a few strawberry plants?
A very easy salad plant is spinach... and chard and or beet spinach.

            Thanks RedThorn

I have some brocolli seeds so will start them off (as I have them) and see if OH can come up with some cage or something as protection - he has already made me mesh lids for my raised beds (i will try to load a pic) which I hope will be some protection from birds etc, and I can raise on bricks as crops grow.

I am planning on some potatoes at the top of my garden, and will plant the brocolli as you suggest.

Strawberries? yes, will look into that too.

            Thanks

Hi bumbleb, how's your plot going? need any seeds? i've had an allotment for 1.5 years now and every year with renewed vigour i buy too many seeds! i try to buy things that would normally be expensive to buy in the shops like yellow courgettes, italian black kale. this year i'm trying to grow unusual tomatoes, multi coloured beets as i love the orange and white ones, multi coloured radishes and carrots, heritages potatoes. we tried them last year and they were fantastic.

Hi Maximillian, they all sound really great, are they difficult to germinate?
My OH is a chef so he is very clever with unusual vegetables. I would love a couple of your seeds to try as experiment if you have any to spare. My enthusiasm is growing by the day (along with everything in the greenhouse) I have been surfing info on the net (but you cant read the seed pkts online!) I can't wait for it to be about mid June and I can sit in the garden amongst the crops with a glass of wine and think well done :-)
I will send you a PM

                Cheers
