  • What could i plant in this ?

    Hi,
I have an old cold water storage tank that is about 3ft high and 3ft in diameter. Obviously this is going to take a lot to fill compost wise, but as it is so deep i dont want to waste space by jus planting stuff on the top. Any Suggestions Please ??

Just because its 3ft deep don't mean you have to fill it to the top. Maybe plant carrots in at as the sides would keep carrot fly out?

Sounds perfect for a fig tree to me!
Does it have drainage holes or could you make some?
At my old house we had a massive metal water tank that we had on the patio painted black with a fig in it, it looked really good and not like a water tank at all!

If you filled it with a mixture of topsoil, compost and sand you could grow some fantastic carrots in it
Or, as most veggies only need about half that depth of soil, you could half fill the container with something cheaper - broken pots or polystyrene etc. - then top off with compost/topsoil and grow anything you like in it

A fruit tree with some pretty edible flowers on top, then core out holes for tumbler toms and strawberry plants.

It's just newbie dreaming and probably totally impractical though...

Someone more in the know will probably tell you that you can't grow tumbler toms in the side of or a container, or that they don't do well with strawberries ...

What about making a pond? You could have your own eco system, complete with a couple of goldfish or koi once it's been up and running for a while. Some waterlilies, oxygen plants, and a sloped rock proud of the water so birds can have a bath.

Hi, Thanks for all the suggestions. The pond is a good idea but we already have one (full of frogs at mo). Think i might do carrots and something else.
I am starting a veggie patch from scratch now and everything has to be in containers as we seriously need to do some weedkilling and i think it will be some time before i can actually get stuff in the ground.

I used a big pot like the one you mention to grow some runner beans and sweet peas in and got lots of crops from it and it looked really pretty too.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
