  • What can i grow?

I have a part of my veg plot that is shaded on one side ( south side ) partly by trees. It does get some sunlight throughout the day. What can I grow in this area.
    Thanks
    Simon.

Most veg is better in sun.

    Comfrey perhaps?

We have mint growing against a North facing wall that only gets sunlight in the middle of Summer, it seems to enjoy the damp and shady area. I planted a couple of stalks one year and now we have a whole patch.

Rhubarb and gooseberries will grow there.Raspberries too.

Might be worth resiting your compost bins to that side if they are in a sunnier spot??

A long permanent bed is probably the way I'd go with.
If you want to plant veg then the rotation would make some crops a bit difficult.

lettuce doesnt mind a bit of shade,

And your shed if you have one. As long as you have some sunshine during the day, most things should grow well enough. I was going to add that most vegetables don't need the sunshine to mature but of course sweetcorn certainly does and potatoes perform hugely better in full sunshine

They say if you ask two gardeners you get three opinions but I would want my Rhubarb in full sun and Raspberries in shade only if they got sun for 50% of the day - I wouldn't be keen to have them "under" trees too (not sure if that is the case here); I have some which are just under the edge of the canopy of a tree (to their North East side, so no shade per se) and they are decidedly lacklustre compared to the rest that are further down the row and clear of trees.

I have one of my beds tight against a north facing 4ft high fence made from waney edge panels. I find that calabrese and cabbage do as well there as in in other bed which is on a south facing fence.

As it is shaded by trees if you are planting in the ground have you considered the tree roots?
