  • Is this a weed, or something useful?

This is growing in the middle of my allotment, and it looks a lot different the other weeds.

    It's not rhubarb, is it?

      Defo not rhubarb.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It does look like a left behind parsnip - I've got a few popping up on the allotment.

Is this another Lovage? They're popping up everywhere - if the roots are like the mad tree in Harry Potter its gotta be.

I am 99% sure it's Pastinaca sativa (wild parsnip ~ or maybe a neighbour has left some to go to seed?)
Careful as you pull it up, some people are allergic to the leaves.

Pastinaca sativa L. (Apiaceae) - Pastinaca comune - Parsnip - Flora Pugliese

It also looks a bit like this plant

              Incarvillea delavayi

              Incarvillea, hardy Gloxinia
But I don't know why that would be on your lottie...parsnip related species are probably more likely!

Cosmo and dibs...I think it is a parsnip. Have a dig around and see...I have some planted out last year and they look exactly the same...I forgot I put them there as the label had gone.

More importantly, the white balance on your camera is well out. It's probably set for fluorescent or something, and it needs to be set on automatic.

I've got this too on my lottie, i pulled it up and it has a very long tap root so i suppose it could be a wild parsnip, didn't try to eat it though it is on the compost heap!!
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
