  • A weed clearing tool that may get me into trouble? Any advice?

    Evening all,

I am working on clearing a large section of the plot where the weeds are about a metre high and I attempted this using my spade (forcing it into the weeds to hack them down). This didn't work out so well and I do not own/wish to rent a strimmer so I decided to buy a 'weed hacking implement' from amazon (essentially a hooked machete type of thing) to help me chop down the weeds.

I have one concern though and that is the possibility I may attract the attention of the police/raise some eyeballs (especially considering what has happened in the news lately) whilst I am hacking them down (obviously I will keep the tool in my bag when transporting it, out of sight). The plot itself is well out of view of anyone but other allotment holders but I do not wish to cause a stir whilst I clear my plot. I have bought a scythe as well but the handle is a bit dodgy. I visited a local garden centre at first to buy one but I was told they did not sell them due to health and safety reasons.

I believe the tools I have will do the job but I am concerned so some advice will be loverly .

    Many thanks,

    Samuel

p.s im in my early 20's and considering the viewpoint of people towards my age group this doesn't help me out too much lol

As long as you keep in from eye sight and keep it at the allotment I think you should be fine if its a gardening tool and you have a valid reason for carrying it don't see there being a problem if your swinging it around and having a general disrespect for most things then you may have problems

we had the same problem with fishing knives a few year ago as long as they were in your fishing box or in the boot of the car but not actulley on you when traveling you are ok they would have to prove that you were intent on doing something else

Im not too sure about the types of weeds (I could take some picks to I.D them later).

Do you think keeping it in my rucksack in another bag wrapped up nicely will be suffice?

Pictures would be good. And yes, well wrapped and out of sight will be fine.

By the way, it's nice to see you replying to threads you've started

I dont have a shed so I cant keep it at the allotment and I dont own my own transport so transporting it in my bag will be the only way. I read that you have to prove the reason why you are carrying it and I only have a key copy as my neighbour and I are sharing a patch so this may be suffice.

Might just see if I can get dropped off, hack all them weeds down and get picked up so I wont have to walk back and forth with this implement.

lol yeah I have a habit sometimes of asking a question and forgetting to reply!

Samuel, I don't really know what sort of an implement you're talking about
Is it a sickle, an adze, a machete or what?

As long as it is enclosed in wrapping and a bag where you cannot easily access it you will be fine.

If you hang it off your belt you will be arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon.

Think of all the people who belong to re-enactment societies they travel the country carrying real weapon's swords, battle axes etc etc.

Then there's carpenters with their saws and chisels, chef's with their knives, the list is endless.
