  • Water Butt

    Hi everyone

I have read through a few old posts, but before I go and buy some cleaner, I am asking for advice.

The butt is half full. It looks like it is a bit brown. Should I buy some Water Butt cleaner? Is there anything natural i can use? Or should I just leave alone. it does not smell.

What looks brown the butt or the water in it??? Is there a lid on the butt or are leaves and other matter getting into the water?

I would be tempted to use the water, particularly if it is not smelling and clean it out when empty or when you don't need the water anymore. I am planning to clean mine in the autumn.

My butts are often stained brown inside due to the water coming off the house roof. Its not a problem. Just get a brush inside in the autumn and the let the rains wash em out.

Has anyone on here tried potassium permanganate in their water butts to keep them smelling and looking a bit cleaner?

Does it matter what it looks like? Put a lid on it if there are leaves getting in.

The only place I don't use water from my water butt is in the greenhouse. I don't have a good reason for this, I've always preferred to use fresh water.

I tend to be a bit fussy too, I'll fill my two water cans when I come home early evening, but don't water the plants for a couple of hours so that the water warms up a little.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

It shouldn't hurt your plants, if it doesn't smell use it. Like the others have said, scrub it out with a good brush in the autumn.
Bob my dog drinks dirty water from every plant saucer, puddle or pond that he can get too, I've tried for 13 years to get him to drink the fresh stuff in his bowl but he has never listened. He's doing o.k
