  • Virgin grower......

    Hi
Spent last year digging out a plot in the garden. Is about 14 ' by 14 '. The soil seems good and I have taken out all the weeds ect... Have dug it over a few times and seems ok. I have never growen veg before but have a couple of books.
So I was going to buy veg plants from the garden center but now think I should start form seeds. I have an old shed with a window (south facing) and when we moved in ages ago the gentleman that lived here before used it as a green house so happy to do that.
Just want some basic advice. From scratch. I want to grow, Brocoli, leeks marrow, potaoes, spring onion, peppers, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, tomotoes, just basic veg. Or any suggestions???

    Where should I start.

Hi Brand New, and welcome to the Grapevine!

There are threads around on most of those topics - just used the Search function to find more information that you would have thought possible!

Growing from seed is fun, though not all plants are grown from seed. "Seed potatoes" are just normal potatoes from virus-free stock - plant one and (hopefully) you get a potato plant with loads more potatoes growing from its roots! Things you can/should be doing right now:

    * buying seed potatoes, ready to plant out next month
    * sowing spring onions - there's a recent thread on this
    * ordering seed for your other stuff, which will need sowing soon

Don't forget to buy some seed trays (the ones with "modules", ie plastic inserts divided into square mini-pots are very useful) and compost as well! And don't worry if your seed-sowing isn't a runaway success - some of the veg you want to grow can be bought quite cheaply on ebay, ready to plant out and grow on. I did that this year with leeks, broccoli and kale, and have been very pleased with the results.

    Have fun!

      Where should you start?
      1) grow what you want to eat
      2) read the packets, with regard to planting dates
      3) consult a good book eg. The Vegetable Expert by Dr Hessayon
      4) if you get a small plastic greenhouse you can increase the number of seeds you can raise yourself (one windowsill won't hold a lot)

      best of luck, and welcome
