i have read that it is possiblt to use a gutter to sow seeds in which would be useful in my confined space but my question is... do i need to drill holes in the guttering to aid drainage or not?

No, don't drill holes. The roots will grow through the holes and you won't be able to slide the plants out of the guttering into the ground.Sent from my pc cos I don't have an i-phone.Comment

I start my peas off in gutters in the greenhouse every year. A great success for me.
Don't drill holes. I cap the ends with the base of cheap slug traps from the Euro (pound) shop to RETAIN water. Don't make them too long if you're going to be emptying them on your own - they can get quite heavy. I slid mine out yesterday. Can be a little difficult, but if you gently loosen the gutter away from the compost BEFORE you start to empty it, it should slide out easily. If planning to empty into a raised bed, check that the gutter isn't too long!
A good beginning is half the work.
