How do we kill off a tree stump, the tree has been cut down but the stump keeps sending out young shoots.

Looking forward to the replies to this one I have a similar problem. I can't dig it out as its on the fence line.

I have lots of tree stumps that I can't dig out, I just plant round them. I also have some that keep on sending out shoots, I have given up trying to do anything about it and keep it trimmed, did plant some trailing nasturtiums over some, that was quite nice.
I'd like to know as well, I do know you can buy treatment, or can have a specialist come to drill into it or something?

I only did this once, two years ago: I carefully drilled half a dozen 1"" wide holes vertically into the stump around the edge of the stump where they touch the cambium layer, poured some neat SBK brushwood killer into each one, then covered the holes up.
It didn't regrow after that.
I read somewhere that the best thing is to mix the SBK with paraffin, then when the stump is dead you can build a big bonfire over it and the fire will work down into the stump. But being up against a fence that wasn't possible for me, I just planted tough things around it instead (Lilac). I'm sure it will rot down eventually.Comment

Lots of tree stump killer products from the likes of Roundup, Bayer, etc. Used one a few years back on a biggish willow stump and it worked a treat.Comment

I had good fun digging out some tree stumps several years ago, they were not massive trees, trunk about 19 inches in diameter.
You need a tool called a mattock, which is like a pick axe.
Dig down and then vent your anger on the roots
Very good exercise and stress relief!!!
It helps if when you chopped down the tree you left several feet of trunk as even when you have chopped through the main roots there are a few smaller ones deeper down which anchor it.
I have the root of what was huge creeper which tries to regrow every year, so I must get the mattock back to get rid of that too.
When I chopped down the trees they never tried to regrow though, I guess it depends on the type,. mine were leylandii.Last edited by esbo; 20-08-2013, 12:10 AM.Comment

When we moved here, landscape gardener friend came to remove a load of ash trees which had seeded in the garden. His method was to mix the stump killer with washing up liquid to help it be absorbed and cover the whole thing in a plastic bag to keep the rain out. Worked well.Comment

Non chemical method (potty will love this
) get some "shorts" of copper pipe & hammer them in around the heartwood.Simple & effective
Chemical method get round up/path clear granules & mix them double strength with white spirit,drill a large hole in living wood of the stump pour in & cover.He who smiles in the face of adversity,has already decided who to blame
