  • Is it too late to sow Toms ?

    Hi
I've not got around to sowing any Toms yet - Is it too late?
I've only got a plastic plant house thingy and would be hoping to ripen most of them outdoors.
Seeds are tumbling toms and other mini types, mostly from free sources....

It is really - but you can still buy some plants, they're everywhere

It is rather late and you may well be better buying however I'd still sow a few as they really will race on at this time of year.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Ever the optimist, I sowed some direct into the soil down at the plot only yesterday! It was a bit of a wild idea, but I had some grew from my homemade compost last year and they were great and only appeared about now. It was free seed, so nothing ventured, nothing gained. As Alison says, seeds planted now should romp away.

Good luck whatever you choose to do.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've bought a couple of plants at a church sale so I'll be OK now. I'm also having a go with some late sowings - well you never know!
I'll have to be more organised next year.
When is a good date to sow?

              HI NTT,

When to sow really depends on what equipment you have so timings vary greatly.

This year I am growing Tumbler & Sungold. The seeds were planted on the 28/02, indoors on a window sill, They went into a cold green house in the middle of April, coming in at night if there was a danger of frost. The Sungold are now in their final pots in the GH and the Tumbler are in their hanging baskets in a glass topped leanto to. All plants now have small toms on them.

                Thanks Colin

I could start them off on the windowsill easy enough, I have a small plastic 'plant house,, the sort you see in Wilko or Lidl for around £15. Do you think that will do the greenhouse job? Or should I sow a couple of weeks later than you? I guess I could have gotten away with it this year, but the weather isn't always so kind.
