Tomatoes

Try some Black or Blue ones Rosee, that should surprise them.............

My dad got me a grow your own gift set for Xmas which has 'tigerella' seeds in which are stripey toms and I've ordered some 'tumbler' seeds as they are supposed to produce great harvest from a hanging basket. No idea what to recommend though as this is my first year properly growing things. I did have a Tom plant last year but no idea what it was! Tomatoes were lovely and sweet from it though

Bigmally, those surprised me, I imagine they could cause untold excitement for an 18mnth old haha

Black Russian are unusual looking and very tasty

Green Zebra is another one.

Black cherry is nice and sweet and the right size for small hands.

Potty

Sweet pea current tomatoes look great, I'm having a go at them this year in a hanging basket. They are the smallest tomatoes you can get I think. Ildi I think they're called are also great, sweet pear shaped yellow toms. Grew them last year very productive.

I agree with Rustylady, Sungold are super, deliciously sweet, a very pretty colour and produce loads. Black Opal (a black cherry) I found really good last year sweet and delicious. Also good on the sweetness stakes are Rosada F1 (baby plum shape), Suncherry Premium F1 (red cherry), Piccolo (red cherry), Floridity F1 (baby plum shape),

Striped tomatoes are fun and look very pretty, striped cherries even better. Green Tiger is good, a reddy black cherry with green stripes, very similar is Tigro F1. Great for growing in a large pot or basket is Rambling Gold Stripe, not very sweet but a good tomato flavour. Rambling Red stripe I found unpleasant to eat. Hundreds and Thousands are also great for a hanging basket and as the name suggests produce a mass of small cherry tomatoes. You could try one of the miniature varieties to grow on a window sill, Micro Gemma (yellow fruit) Micro Tom (red fruit) or one of the Sweet and Neat series. Some of the blue-black cherries look great, like Bigmally's first picture. Dancing with Smurfs, Helsing Junction Blue are both good ones, very dark with a good tomato taste, though I don’t think there are any for sale in the UK at the moment.

How many tomato plants are you thinking of growing?

Last year I tried:
- Gardener´s delight, numerous small and tasty tomatoes, very reliable.
- Outdoor girl, they were in the polytunnel and they were okish
- Red cherry.
- Black cherry.
- Black Krim, each plant only produced two to five tomatoes, but they were big with good flavour.

... and this year I am going to grow for first time:
- Ildi Yellow Bush.
- Garden Pearl.
- Tiny Tim.
- Red Robin.
