  • tomato and Pepper Seeds

    Hi All
I'm looking at getting my first crop started. I've never grown ANYTHING before in my life...well, apart from a sunflower when I was about 5 but that doesn't count...

I have some tomato seeds and some pepper seeds (bell peppers) What do I do with them? do I need to germinate the seeds? if so, how do I do that? or do I just plant them into trays?

I have a "portable" greenhouse, one of those shelving stands with a plastic cover. Should I put them in that and leave them grow in the greenhouse or should I transplant them into the ground of my allotment once the seedlings show?

I'm really eager to get going so any help and advice is much apprciated!!

    Sam

P.S I live in South Wales...not the fancy, posh new one in Australia...the old, wet one in Britain, if that helps?

Plant them in modules & keep them warm Sam

As soon as the times right get a few sunflowers in, there is a class for them in the Virtual Vine Show which happens later in the year you can see previous years in this section .... Fruit & Vegetable Showcase

I sowed mine yesterday,a light covering of compost, don't put them in too deep. They've got a plastic lid but you can cover with cling film & put on the sunniest windowsill peppers take longer to germinate than tomatoes,I don't put peppers in the same tray as tomatoes because when they germinate & start growing you need to take the lid off (peppers will still need it on). Nice & sunny today for them.

Sow them into small trays or modules filled with damp (not dripping wet!) compost, slip a plastic bag over the top and keep them somewhere warm. Kitchen windowledge is where mine go.

When they have grown out of the compost take the plastic bag off and keep them in the light.

When they've got a few more leaves gently move them to a bigger pot. to grow on.

^^^^and they aren't hardy plants - they can't be planted out till your last frost. Possibly mid May for you. You can put them in the GH during the days in April but if temperatures are forcast below 10 you will need to get them back indoors.

Where abouts in South Wales are you? Lots of Welshies on here

It will be some weeks before it is warm enough to put your seedlings in your mini greenhouse, late April or early May at a guess from your location. So you need to think about where you will put them before then. Tomatoes grow fast, peppers less so, and will need potting on a couple of times before they can go out. They need as much light as you can give them. The germination rate of both is pretty high, tomatoes almost 100%' so don't sow the whole packet. Think about how many plants you need/ want/ have room for, and sow perhaps one or two seeds more than you need. Grow a few well rather than loads not so well. Enjoy!

                Hi Saint,
As said above. Im just starting to put my tomato seedlings into the greenhouse in the days as soon as its above 10 degrees c, then i bring them back in at tea time, the chillis and peppers stay indoors all the time tho untill at least the end of april, possibly later as Scarlet says.

Oh, and welcome to the vine
