  • Tomatillo Plants - greenhouse or indoor?

I've been managing to grow with some success my first tomatillo plants. I have 2. They live in a polythene greenhouse in a sheltered spot in the garden. As per their reputation, I have had tonnes of flowers. I really want these to grow into my first tomatillos (some have started and are about 10mm in diameter!!! ), but I live in Scotland and light/warmth are at a premium. Average temp now is 6-9 degrees.

My options are - leave them outside for more light, but colder nights, until the first frosts. Or bring them in to the house, which will be warmer, but I don't have a place near a window to put them, so they'll get the heat, but not the light.

Which will be better for them?

In the UK they're really annuals (although will self seed very easily). I know I'm not as far north as you but I find they grow by far the best outside in the lottie beds. The plants get huge if you're not careful and if planted out in early June will have sufficient time to produce lots of fruits. This summer has been a bit odd though with the weather. I'm not sure you can over winter them easily, have never tried but they are frost tender so won't do much now, especially with the falling light levels.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
